Going Green in Your Own Backyard
Peter Liu and Cristina Senjug believe that individuals can help our ailing environment. For a new project at their Junction home, they researched Canadian companies with green technologies that could be used to help protect our local rivers and lakes from stormwater pollution. They installed a Xero Flor green roof system on their studio/garage that blooms in the summer and goes dormant in the winter and requires little maintenance. The Cascata rain barrels and composter look like terra cotta and are decorative pieces in the yard. Together, the green roof and the rain barrels can collect 2700 litres of rainfall at one time. 'Why use treated water to water the garden? Our rain barrels help save the city money while we save on our water bills. It's a win-win." Councillor Bill Saundercook hailed the couple as an example to the community. For more information on green technologies: www.xeroflor.ca and www.algreenproducts/gogreen
