2008 November > Moms, Dads and Kids Walk to School On Wednesday, October 8th, elementary schools across Canada and around the world participated in the International Walk a Child to School Day. This event promotes safe walking and healthy habits that can be practiced throughout the year and also helps raise awareness of how walkable our community is and where safety improvements can be made. SNAP visited Swansea Public School early in the morning to see just how fun the event is. The school went all out in celebrating their 11th year of participating in the important occasion. Moms and dads walked alongside their children and met at the school's outdoor playground for free refreshments, speeches and a lot more. Police officers were present on bikes and horseback and, as always, captured the attention of the children. Students who walked, scooted or biked to school completed ballots for prizes donated by local businesses and the class with the most number of walkers won the coveted golden shoe award. Every one was in good spirits on this warm October morning as they celebrated this annual event. Mark your calendars for next year as we continue to increase awareness in our neighbourhood and make it a better and safer place for our children.
